Music nightly - Wed-Sat 8.30-11pm
Uptown is proud to be able to represent and showcase the Melbourne sound. The best improvised music from other parts of the world tour here, but Melbourne has a particular sound all of it's own. Sometimes described as krusty, krunchy, more experimental or streetwise, it is always backed up by the incredible strength of the players here. And while it may sometimes be more rough around the edges than slick, there remains a level of musicianship on a par with anywhere in the world.
Uptown has already hosted such Australian luminaries as Bernie McGann, Allan Browne, Dale Barlow, Mike Nock, Miroslav Bukovsky as well as players such as Paul Grabowsky, Dave Ades, Ian Chaplin, James Muller, Jamie Oehlers, Joe Chindamo, Julien Wilson, Scott Tinkler, Stephen Magnusson, Eugene Ball, Simon Barker, Andrea Keller, Ted Vining, Phil Treloar, Wilbur Wilde, Tony Buck and many many other important players on the local and national scene. Many international acts from Europe and the U.S. have also appeared at Uptown; and of course, a number of sell-out visits from the international monster, Boston saxophonist George Garzone.
Uptown acknowledges the tradition of this music in this area. From Australia’s first ever jazz club set up by Graham Bell in the 40’s – The Uptown Club – in Queensbury St, North Melbourne right through to the Royal Derby, Gypsy Bar and Cape Lounge scene’s in the 90’s, as well as the short lived but essential “Thursdays” @ Sossa’s above the souvlaki shop, all in Brunswick St, Fitzroy.
Uptown continues to feature and support the Melbourne sound in improvised music, as well as encouraging collaborations between local bands and players from other parts of the country and from around the world.
We warmly invite you to be part of it . . . .
